Working from Photo to Sketch to Painting.....the photo.

This is the photo for the painting "Out of Luck." It is a photo of an old diner/motel on route 40 west of Hagerstown called the Shamrock Inn. Once upon a time, prior to the interstate highway, this was a thriving business. The photo shows the effects of time and change on all of us. I was drawn this picture because of the warm light and shadows of late afternoon on the buildings, contrasting with the cold lonely neglect of a decaying business. This was shot on the way home after work one evening. I passed this scene many times before I finally stopped and captured the shot.
